Bill Waris was known as a bare-knuckled campaigner and political deal-maker who had a soft spot for the poor.
As Jackson County Executive during the 1980s, He cemented long-term contracts with the Chiefs and Royals to keep them in Kansas City for a long time. He boosted recreational opportunities including overseeing Longview Golf Course and Christmas in the Park. and successfully managed a massive property reappraisal in Jackson County. He later became a successful lobbyist in Jefferson City, Missouri.
Those who knew Waris, who began his professional life as a basketball coach at Saint John’s Seminary and later the first men’s basketball coach at Avila College. He also served as grade school principal at Saint Thomas More Grade School in South Kansas City He said his approach to campaigning reflected his attitude toward competition. “I don’t like to lose,” Waris once said. “I don’t like to play a game of checkers unless I win. I play hard for everything.”
He was a faith-filled man, a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather, a community advocate, and a friend to many, especially the poor and those down and out with their luck. He dedicated his life to public service, community, and helping others…”
